Program 02 · Educational games

Agro Defender

Educational tower defense that puts the player in charge of a Paraná farm, balancing production, profit, and environmental impact across waves of challenges.

Agenda 2030

Alignment with the 2030 Agenda

The game articulates two UN Sustainable Development Goals with grounding tied directly to what the student experiences match after match. Colors and titles follow the official UN palette. Keep this in sync with the pedagogical manifest in the agro-defender repository (src/config/pedagogy.ts).

ODS 12

Consumo e Produção Responsáveis

Assegurar padrões de produção e de consumo sustentáveis

The core of the gameplay is the tradeoff between basic towers (cheaper, degrade the environment) and sustainable ones (more expensive, preserve) — every match the player makes responsible-production choices in practice. The final seal weighs production × environmental impact.

Evidências no jogo

  • Seal mechanic (Green Gold, Silver, Bronze, or No Seal) rewards the balance between production and environment.
  • Wave 2 fact: "No-till planting reduces soil erosion by up to 90% compared to conventional planting" (IAPAR).
  • QuizScene questions about basic versus sustainable defense choices.

ODS 13

Ação contra a Mudança Global do Clima

Tomar medidas urgentes para combater a mudança climática e seus impactos

Enemies represent climatic and biological pressures (drought, flood, pests); sustainable defenses increase the farm's resilience. Pedagogical facts dispersed across waves cover climate change with official sources.

Evidências no jogo

  • Climate facts shown between waves (sources: SEEG, EMBRAPA, IDR-PR).
  • Enemies as a representation of climate impacts on Paraná agribusiness.
  • Quiz questions about the water cycle and food chain.

Programa

How to use it in class

  1. 01

    Introduce the scenario

Before the match, open a conversation about agriculture in Paraná, monocultures, and biodiversity. Define what the group means by 'sustainable production'.

  2. 02

    Play in pairs

Each pair plays a full match. Encourage discussion during gameplay: which towers to use? when to accept loss of production in exchange for lower impact?

  3. 03

    Share the final seal

At the end, the game awards a seal (Green Gold, Silver, Bronze, No Seal) based on the balance between production and environment. Compare results and debate strategies.
